MASSES

by

Pierre de La Rue Josquin des Prez

Pierre de La Rue ( ca. 1460-1518)

Missa pro defunctis

Josquin des Prez ( ca. 1440-15 21)

Missa "Hercules Dux Ferrariae"

La deploration de Johannes Ockeghem/Nymphes des bois (Requiem)

New London Chamber Choir

James Wood, Conductor

Both Pierre de La Rue's Requiem and Josquin des Prez's Mass "Hercules Dux Ferrariae" seem to have been written for some specific use, but in neither case do we know the occasion on which it was first performed. We cannot even be sure for whom La Rue's work was written. Josquin's Mass obviously was for Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, however; it is most likely a product of the years the composer spent in the duke's service. And Josquin's Deploration de Johannes Ockeghem was probably written in or shortly after the year in which Ockeghem died.
