Symphony No. 1 in E Major, Op. 5

''Slavyanskaya''

The USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra

Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Conductor

Alexander Glazunov wrote Symphony no. 1 when we was not yet 17. Its first performance, on March 13, 1882, was warmly received; Rimsky-Korsakov later recalled that it was "a genuine red-letter day .... " Although the success of thisfirst version of the First Symphony was certainly well deserved, there were some problems with the score. The composer himself realized that and twice modified the work. What you hear on this recording is the final version of the First Symphony, to which the orchestra under Gennady Rozhdestvensky does great justice.
